Budget planning

Dear faculty and staff,

Thank you for your many important contributions to our teaching, research and engagement mission. Our growth and progress are due in large part to your dedication and hard work.

I remain very optimistic about our future and the momentum we have built together. At the same time, we face several emerging fiscal challenges that require careful planning and stewardship. As expected, we are seeing reductions in indirect cost returns as well as overall sponsored project expenditures. Additionally, we know that the state is facing financial headwinds that are likely to require some adjustment to funding for higher education.

While the timing and magnitude of these reductions are not yet fully known, it is prudent for us to take proactive steps now to protect our core teaching, research and engagement missions and position the university to respond effectively as additional information becomes available.

In the coming weeks, we will work closely with Vice Presidents, Vice Chancellors, Vice Provosts and Deans to identify opportunities to reduce FY27 expenditures and prepare for anticipated reductions in the FY28 core budget.

As faculty and staff, please continue to do the important work in teaching, research and engagement. It is our hope to minimize the impacts of the budget cuts to your critical mission.

We have successfully navigated significant challenges over the past decade. I am confident that by working together and exercising thoughtful stewardship of our resources, we will continue to advance our mission and emerge stronger.

Sincerely,

Mun Y. Choi, Ph.D.

President, University of Missouri
