Dear Mizzou community,
It’s hard to believe that another semester and a new year has arrived. So many extraordinary moments, discoveries and successes from last year are still generating impact, and I am already seeing the excitement for 2019 as our community returns to campus.
What life-changing ideas and innovations will come out of our classrooms, labs and studios? How will our collaborative, enterprising environment help us further our excellence? With the tremendous group of students, faculty and staff we have here, truly anything is possible. And that’s what makes our university so special and so strong.
I hope that you had a fantastic winter break. Let me be the first to welcome you back to Mizzou for an extraordinary 2019.

New $40 million scholarship fund will help hundreds of Kansas City students attend Mizzou
Through a partnership between KC Scholars, the UM System and MU, a new $40 million scholarship fund has been created to help Mizzou fulfill its commitment to affordability statewide. Now, hundreds of Kansas City students will have greater access to the many life-changing opportunities the university offers.
Game on: Mizzou to launch competitive esports program
Beginning next fall, Mizzou students will be able to compete in esports, the world’s fastest growing sport that enjoys an audience of nearly 500 million fans per year. Mizzou is one of the largest universities in the nation to join the National Association of Collegiate Esports, and with 5,000 square feet of on-campus gaming space in addition to planned scholarships, the university is further investing in the interdisciplinary, innovative spirit of its students.
School of Medicine treating patients and improving lives in Ecuador
Last fall, the School of Medicine partnered with an international medical relief organization to send a select group of students, faculty and staff to Ecuador. As part of the U.S. Southern Command’s Enduring Promise 2018 initiative to Central and South America, these Tigers collaborated with military personnel to provide Ecuadorians with much-needed medical and surgical care.
Student-led MizzouThon pledges $1.3 million to expand Women’s and Children’s Hospital
Committed to the financial and emotional support of pediatric patients for over a decade, MizzouThon, MU’s student-led philanthropic organization, recently pledged $1.3 million toward the expansion and renovation of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. These funds are the direct result of the hard work and commitment of student leaders, and they will help the hospital purchase specialized beds as well as support its music therapy program.
