Dear Mizzou community,
Our Nobel Laureate George Smith spent decades researching his life-changing discovery — phage display. I hope you have had a chance to hear him talk about the support he received from the science community, and how his setbacks were just as valuable as the breakthroughs that led to his Nobel Prize-winning work.
I am thrilled George will be speaking to the campus community tonight. He symbolizes not only what it means to be Mizzou Made, but also how significant the impact of research done here at Mizzou is to the world. Ideas and solutions generated here improve lives, stimulate the economy, lend insight into the human condition and so much more.
We couldn’t achieve all of this without our faculty, staff and students. You make us stronger, more innovative and — most importantly — more impactful.
To further highlight the innovative work happening across campus, I hope you will join us for Show Me Mizzou Day on April 13. This campus wide open house will help us showcase how our globally-engaged campus changes the world.

New competitive chess team soon to call checkmate
Mizzou’s new competitive chess team will bring the world’s most talented players to campus and continue our tradition of student excellence — inside and outside the classroom. The team will partner with the St. Louis Chess Club and will be coached by Romanian grandmaster Cristian Chirila, who will shape our student players and their skills into the best.
$10 million grant helps Mizzou establish National Center for Rural School Mental Health
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Mizzou a nearly $10 million grant to establish a National Center for Rural School Mental Health. The Center — which will support K-12 students’ mental health needs in rural schools across Missouri, Montana and Virginia — provides life-changing research to educators and administrators through a database and online training system.
Foremost Dairy Research Center ranked among top 10 college/university herds
Recently named one of the top 10 college/university herds by Holstein Association USA, MU’s Foremost Dairy Research Center is being recognized for its innovation and impact. Faculty and student researchers continue to uncover new ways to improve milk output and productivity while maintaining herd health, helping farmers face the nationwide challenge of a struggling dairy industry.
An evening with Nobel Laureate George Smith
Come celebrate our Nobel Laureate George Smith today from 7-9 p.m. in Jesse Auditorium. Attendees will get to hear a lecture from Professor Emeritus Smith as well as stories from the two outstanding journalism undergraduates who traveled to Stockholm during Nobel Week and showcased the “Missouri Method” on an international platform.
